So I went to electric zoo when I went on Saturday I immediately lost my phone literally within the first 3 minutes of walking in the concert, and I wasn't even fucked up at all yet, completely sober lol. I had just bought that blackberry bold 4 days before that so I was very angry that I lost it. When I got home the next day I went on my facebook and the person who found my phone went onto my facebook application and wrote on my wall saying he found it and was going to bring it to the police. He ended up bringing it to the lost n' found at ezoo. So I emailed them and told them the story. They got back to me today and said that all items were given to the 25th precinct. So I went there today and the cops were being such dicks but I got my phone back. What a nice person to put a brand new 400 dollar blackberry in the lost n found and post on my facebook about it, what a nice person. What kind of person does that.... someone on rolls lol. I wish I could thank the person but I am not able to trace back who found it.

If you're a typical wired American, you've got a bunch of tech tools you like and a bunch more you covet. You have a cell phone that can easily text....

If you're a typical wired American, you've got a bunch of tech tools you like and a bunch more you covet. You have a cell phone that can easily text. You've got a laptop configured just the way you want it. Maybe you have a Kindle for reading, or an iPad. And when the next new thing comes along, some of you will line up on the first day it's available.

So why can't work keep up? Why are you forced to use an unfamiliar, and sometimes outdated, operating system? Why do you need a second laptop, maybe an older and clunkier one? Why do you need a second cell phone with a new interface, or a BlackBerry, when your phone already does e-mail? Or a second BlackBerry tied to corporate e-mail? Why can't you use the cool stuff you already have?

More and more companies are letting you. They're giving you an allowance and allowing you to buy whatever laptop you want, and to connect into the corporate network with whatever device you choose. They're allowing you to use whatever cell phone you have, whatever portable e-mail device you have, whatever you personally need to get your job done. And the security office is freaking.

You can't blame them, really. Security is hard enough when you have control of the hardware, operating system and software. Lose control of any of those things, and the difficulty goes through the roof. How do you ensure that the employee devices are secure, and have up-to-date security patches? How do you control what goes on them? How do you deal with the tech support issues when they fail? How do you even begin to manage this logistical nightmare? Better to dig your heels in and say "no."

But security is on the losing end of this argument, and the sooner it realizes that, the better.

The meta-trend here is consumerization: cool technologies show up for the consumer market before they're available to the business market. Every corporation is under pressure from its employees to allow them to use these new technologies at work, and that pressure is only getting stronger. Younger employees simply aren't going to stand for using last year's stuff, and they're not going to carry around a second laptop. They're either going to figure out ways around the corporate security rules, or they're going to take another job with a more trendy company. Either way, senior management is going to tell security to get out of the way. It might even be the CEO, who wants to get to the company's databases from his brand new iPad, driving the change. Either way, it's going to be harder and harder to say no.

At the same time, cloud computing makes this easier. More and more, employee computing devices are nothing more than dumb terminals with a browser interface. When corporate e-mail is all webmail, corporate documents are all on GoogleDocs, and when all the specialized applications have a web interface, it's easier to allow employees to use any up-to-date browser. It's what companies are already doing with their partners, suppliers, and customers.

Also on the plus side, technology companies have woken up to this trend and -- from Microsoft and Cisco on down to the startups -- are trying to offer security solutions. Like everything else, it's a mixed bag: some of them will work and some of them won't, most of them will need careful configuration to work well, and few of them will get it right. The result is that we'll muddle through, as usual.

Security is always a tradeoff, and security decisions are often made for non-security reasons. In this case, the right decision is to sacrifice security for convenience and flexibility. Corporations want their employees to be able to work from anywhere, and they're going to have loosened control over the tools they allow in order to get it.
So this is the kind of shit that happens to me sometimes in games. It generally results from massive lag or some other bug, but it's always quite entertaining to watch regardless.

So for the past 2 weeks I've put my time into Starcraft 2 for one reason... To complete the entire campaign on brutal.
No easy task obviously. I was having trouble just getting the achievements on hard. So I knew it was going to take a while. Thankfully my roomate actually plays SC2 too and is pretty damn good at it (ranked 12th in diamond in 1v1 and 4th in 2v2). So he said he'd help me with it and give me advice when possible.
There were a few missions that got me stuck (like the one where you steal the odin), but it was the last mission, All In, that took me a good 2 days to finally do. I tried it without the nidas worm and also without the air. When all was said and done, it took me 9 tries total to beat the last mission on Brutal and finally finish the campaign.

So I moved up to my college apartment last week, and the first thing I did when I got my PC hooked up was swap out the PSU with my roommate's to see if it was bad. Turns out I got the same problem with his PSU, so I'm sure now that it's the motherboard. However, when I put his PSU back in his PC, something happened with his video card and it broke. It still works in safe mode albeit with some major issues, so I gave him my video card and have been using his broken one. This is enough to get internet and such, but I won't be able to play games until he gets a replacement card and I can get mine back.

My absence from the forums has been rough. My absence from TF2 has been difficult, but today while taking a shower i thought of something... is this kind of what an addict goes through during withdrawal? It feels pretty shitty, but when i thought about it, i was still playing starcraft2 and still using the internet daily...

The other night I was reading about some researchers who were locking themselves in cabins in the mountains (miles away from a power line) for a week to see if their brain chemistry would change, since all of them sit in front of a computer all day and have been since the 90's (older then a good portion of the people reading this). There was some anecdotal observations by the researchers that they felt more focused and at ease without the machines. Like time was slowing down and smoothing out. They were less rushed and less stressed, and were generally happier.

I think part of me needs to know what that feels like. If any part of me can even feel it. So as such, starting today i'm taking the power cables out of my Computers, TVs, ipod/ipads and cell phones and locking them away with someone i trust for a week. Just to see what happens to me.

That's a full week at home, but no technology. Sure we go on trips and vacations without our beloved machines, but do we ever spend a week or two without them while sitting in front of them, powered off? Do you think you could do it? The most entertaining thing you could do is hang out with a friend or read a book. If your friends are busy and you hate to read to stare at a wall until you pass out.

Could you do it? Can I even do it? I wonder... I'll report back on my results next weekend.
